Jesus: His person, mission and impact

Elective unit for postgraduates

Content: This unit explores the person of Jesus as depicted in the gospel narratives. It examines his impact from historical and contemporary perspectives (both Christian and non-Christian). It explores how Jesus is encountered as Christ in Christian experience and testimony.

Learning outcomes:

Undergraduate

  1. Identify key depictions of Jesus derived in and from the gospel narratives.
  2. Account for the impact of the person and message of Jesus in selected periods of history
  3. Articulate how Jesus is encountered as Christ in Christian experience and testimony.
  4. (level 2) Discuss selected contemporary engagements with the person of Jesus.
  5. (level 3) Compare and contrast selected contemporary engagements with the person of Jesus.

Postgraduate

  1. Identify key depictions of Jesus derived in and from the gospel narratives.
  2. Analyse the impact of the person and message of Jesus in selected periods of history.
  3. Research and describe the ways in which Jesus is encountered as Christ in Christian experience and testimony.
  4. Compare and contrast selected contemporary engagements with the person of Jesus.
  5. Reflect theologically on the role Jesus has played in a particular, (researched) social issue.

 

Pre-requisites: CT1/8001S Theology for today’s world or an equivalent foundational unit in Systematic Theology
